Introduction: A Month That Matters
Every October, Cyber Security Awareness Month shines a spotlight on one of the biggest challenges facing organisations today: keeping ahead of an ever-evolving threat landscape. While frameworks and regulations differ around the globe — NIST in the US, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 internationally, the Essential 8 in Australia — they all point to the same truth: Visibility is the foundation of resilience.
And in cybersecurity, visibility starts with your logs.
The Global Cyber Landscape: Different Frameworks, Same Challenges
No matter where your business operates, you’re likely guided by a security framework or maturity model. Some focus on compliance, others on controls or risk management. But whether you look at NIST, ISO 27001, Essential 8, or CIS Controls, event logging is always present in the foundation layer.
Why? Because without logs you can’t:
- Detect incidents before they escalate
- Investigate breaches and remediate quickly
- Prove compliance during audits
- Optimise SIEM and SOC efficiency
Frameworks differ in approach, but they converge on this principle: no visibility = no control.
From Awareness to Action
Cyber Security Awareness Month is more than education — it’s an opportunity to reassess. Awareness is only powerful when paired with action, and logging is one of the most actionable controls security leaders can strengthen today.
Done right, event logging transforms from a compliance requirement into a strategic advantage:
- Clarity: Know what’s happening across endpoints, servers, and applications.
- Control: Reduce noise and empower SOC teams to focus on real threats.
- Compliance: Meet and exceed evolving standards with audit-ready data.
- Cost Efficiency: Cut SIEM ingestion costs by up to 90% without losing visibility.
We call these the Cyber 4Cs, and they will be our focus throughout this month.
ACSC Essential 8
The Australian Cyber Security Centre’s Essential 8 provides a baseline for cyber resilience, but putting it into practice means collecting the right data to prove patching, privilege use, and incident response effectiveness.
Snare strengthens Essential 8 maturity by delivering trusted, forensic-grade event logs that enhance visibility, simplify compliance audits, and reduce SIEM ingestion costs.
NIST Cybersecurity Framework
The NIST CSF is built on five functions — Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover. Event logging underpins all of them, yet organisations often face visibility gaps and inflated costs when managing large volumes of data.
Snare helps close those gaps by normalising and optimising log collection, giving teams actionable insight for detection and response while controlling operational expenses.
ISO/IEC 27001:2022
The global gold standard for information security, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 requires organisations to prove they can monitor, audit, and manage risks consistently. Meeting these requirements can be resource-heavy without the right tools.
Snare enables compliance with less complexity by providing auditable, tamper-resistant logs, streamlining reporting, and lowering the cost of log ingestion — making ongoing certification more efficient and sustainable.
Snare’s Commitment: Leading in Event Log Collection
For more than 20 years, Snare has been trusted by enterprises and government agencies worldwide to deliver reliable, scalable, and cost-effective log collection. As cyber threats evolve, so does Snare.
This month, we’re proud to introduce Snare Agent v5.10, delivering:
- Global SOC enablement with log translation for non-English Windows audit logs
- Simplified management through LDAP authentication and configuration templates
- Greater flexibility in managing large estates with Snare Agent Manager v2.2.0
These enhancements aren’t just “new features.” They’re part of our ongoing mission to give organisations the visibility and control they need to thrive in the digital age.
